Custom hand-painted tile makes a wine cellar a must to see by guests. Carolyn usually has several interviews with the client to get a feel for what ideas he or she wants to portray. The use of vibrant color that can be used in hand-painted tiles brings warmth and conversation to a visit to the wine cellar!
Wine Cellar Entrance - The field tiles used were 6" commercial tiles with a rough stone look. The client wanted the entrance to the cellar to look like an underground wine cellar. To bring in color, Carolyn used the red shirt to bring in color and the vaulted ceiling adds depth. The actual scenes and side color grape accent tiles were done on a red quarry tile the same size as the field in the raised glaze cuerda-seca method. A vine was painted in gold on the field tile to draw the eye around the 9¹ x 12¹ room with its 12 hand-painted tile scenes. Some of the scenes were hunting scenes since the client liked to hunt. The colored grape tiles bordering the scenes added color to coordinate with a special large wine bottle with a hand-painted label to be displayed in the center of the room.
